HK-500GT 3D Electric Helicopter Kit (incl. blades and extras)
HK-500GT 3D Electric Helicopter Kit (incl. blades and extras)

The high performance HK-500GT is 3D flight ready.
99% of parts are compatible with the Align T-rex 500
Much bigger than its smaller 450 brother, the 500GT is an exciting helicopter to see in action and even more exciting to fly. Its 2024 alloy head ensures hard core 3D pilots wont be dissapointed in the performance and the beautifully painted cowl and Titanium anodized components make this a visually stunning helicopter with performance to back it up!
You wont find unecissary or poorly fitting bling alloy components on this heli. Alot of thought has been put into the production of this machine as seen by the FRN* tail which uses alloy only where its needed; in the arms and partially hidden belt pulley making it lighter with no sacrifice in strength; proving the helis no-bling all-performance attitude.
All parts are 100% compatible with T-Rex 500
Included are main and tail blades & Carbon Fiber boom supports.

We guarantee you wont find a better priced heli of this quality anywhere!

i bought a hk 500 gt and want to know what parts and quantities I need to be ready to fly.
as servants
battery
I already have motor
I already have esc
radio
receptor
thanks
   Fernando Marques (61%)
Hello, you need three cyclic servos plus one for the tail rotor. These servants must not exceed measures 35 * 15 * 29. It also needs pinion 12T or 13T to mount in your motor, maybe extensions for the servos, one Gyro, one battery 6s 1p minimum 20c 2200mha to 3000mha, 2650mha is a good choice or 2p 3s with the same characteristics but in this case you need a cable series. Do not forget the connectors for the motor and ESC Radio equipment should be at least 6 channels with softwere for helicopters, 3 servos 120 degrees. Make good flights Respects

Does this come with the new GT500 hardened head? If not, WHY not?
   yakflyer (63%)
Mark. The best suggestion I can offer you is to go to RCGroups (Here: ***********rcgroups****/forums/showthread.php?t=1125617) and follow ChrisWNY thread. I did exactly as he posted and have had nothing but success! I logged over 20 flights on mine and still loven it! Just recenlty bought a couple of the 6s Nanos (35-70c)3,300maH and enjoying longer flights.

Hello,
Can anyone point me to a resource for what other items they reccomend from Hobbyking to build a compleate heli with Radio.
I am a bit confused as to which servos I need to buy and how many I will need. Also which battery should I buy and how many.

Will the HK gyro be ok for this? Can I used a standar mode 1 2.4gh radio set and will I need a BEC unit if I get the 80a turnigy ESC?

Any links to build advice would also be great.

Thanks Vince (Australia)
   jedoug (70%)
I'm Using 4 of the turnigy 930 servo's, The HK 401B gyro (I don't fly 3D), a Castle Creations ICE 75 ESC, and an Align 1600kv motor. I originally got the Turnigy 2200kv but the headspeed was insane on a 6s lipo.
   Pygar (34%)
I use the same servos as jedoug but have an Align 60 Amp ESC, Turnigy Typhoon 500 1500Kv motor and Futaba GY401 gyro with Align DS520 servo for the tail. The standard (Align original) is to use 6 cell 2600 mAh battery packs. Its important to have a good soft spinup which mean putting money into the ESC and a good gyro for steady tail.

I just ordered aHk500gt and can't wait for it to be here in holland but i heard a lot of scary stories about the tail i not fly 3D but normal sport flying loops etc do I have to change the tail??Or are these issues fixed nog Jason???
   Cord (39%)
The new one you get will not have this problem. The first out of the box had too much distance between the tail and main gear. You can check this first.
But the tail gear is very sensitive, every touch can destroi it
   Hermansjoerd (29%)
Well i bought a full metal (no torque tube just belt driven) copter x tail! 30 dollar and i think it will worth every pennie!cheers

Hi, i bought this heli today and i have a question*
I have 4 servos 26g with 2.0kg torque 0.09 seg, so for the tail is good, but , are they valid for swash?

   Philipp (39%)
Hello For swash you need min. 30 Ncm Servos. I have the turingy MG 930. This size works perfectly for normal flight and soft 3d. ***********hobbycity****/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9391 Regards Phi
   tomaya (36%)
what do you mean with 30ncm? how many kg are necessary for swash 500?(normal flight and sport without 3d)

hi friend, This servo is ideal for ciclic.
   hlcvbeek (47%)
Hi I used the MG930 servo's for swash. Iff these are good enough I don't know yet but these are recommended by HK themselves.

30ncm = 3kg.
Use the Turnigy MG930 and you are OK.

hi friend, Yes i do.
   richaevans (23%)
The frames will not take std size servos without major modding. I know cos I fitted 5$ std servos to mine. Mounting holes need to be a lot bigger and large spacers are needed. There are also main gear clearence issues as well as canopy clearence issues and servo ball position problems. Not worth the headache but I can post pics of mine if you want.
   teejay186 (36%)
Sorry, to my great dissapointment, no can`t do...
   hlcvbeek (47%)
What do you mean with full size servo's. The holes for the servo's has the following sizes:
37 mm x 17 mm
   richaevans (23%)
I think he means std size as per hk listing categories: 31g-49g
   Didgeridoo (51%)
Not stock- you would have to modify the frame. ie- BMS-661DMG is too big.
   ranma103 (40%)
no you have to use mini servos. wish we could use full size.
   Skitzin (36%)
No, the frame is slightly too thin to fit full size servo's There is a modification to make a full size servo on the tail tough, but its not recomended
   Jos Antonio (50%)
no, you need use mini servo.

Replaced the screws with longer screws in the head mixing arms - Replaced the tail case assembly with HK metal tail assembly (added 3 space washers to accept the t-rex rotor shaft) - replaced the tail rotor shaft assy with T-rex assy (shaft metal was soft from HK - replaced the tail rotor holder with T-rex (not certain I needed to do that).
Its an excellent bird - bought 3 HK500GT birds two for me and one for a friend.
   mariube (27%)
I used longer screws on the ball links on the servo arm. That way I can get a nut on the back. Stock screws just go into the servo horn and that seem risky. These screws fit into the recess in the ball: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8671 and with nuts: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6360

I can not get rid of the tail wag. It wags back and forth constantly and gets worse with any throttle input. I am using a logictech 2100t gyro and futaba 9650 servo which work perfect on my 450. The blades a balanced but i still see a lot of vibration in the tail boom supports and tail pushrod. Where should I look next?
   Flew Boy (89%)
Hey Chris, the tail wag may just be your gain settings on your Tx, try reducing it a little, if you've already tried that make sure there is no binding of any parts that involve rudder control, as in the guides for the push rod and any moving parts of the tail section, I've had the vibration in the tail problem my self and actualy destroyed 4 tail sections, I found it to be ***rly made rear axles, my mate and I ordered 8 replacment shafts all together and every single bl00dy one of them measured different to each other, NO QUALITY CONTROL!!!! and they all were bent right at the tip where the divot was drilled for the grub screw, we both put genuine A-line shafts in and it solved alot of vibrations :o) Well I hope this info helps ya Chris, happy flying mate.
   Flew Boy (89%)
Come on H/KING, what's wrong with writing the word "p00r" or "p00rly" ?????
   Tony (50%)
if the tail is wagging then in simple terms the servo is trying to overcompensate, turn down the gain and or shorten the throw of the pushrod by coming up a whole or two on the servo arm
   Robert (50%)
look at the gyro and turn down the gain a little
   kostakis52 (30%)
Check the tail shaft maybe is not straight and also balance the tail blades if it still same then check your gyro settings you may have gain high.
   Tony (50%)
most gyros are senitive to vibration,so obviously you have serious balance issues, which in turn is probably upseting the gyro, where to next
remove the main blades,s***l up and see if vibes are still there, if so then loosen the tail drive belt disengage the belt pulley then s***l up again, this will eliminate the belt and all of the tail,by doing this you will remobe the most common and show up the obvious, i did this and found a new main shaft with a huge 1.5 mm runout,a simple fix as apposed to your gyro letting go in flight
   Micah (36%)
The wag is from the gain in the gyro. I turn mine way down so I have to fly the tail. Then slowly turn it up just until it starts to wag again and then turn it down a tad.
   ranma103 (40%)
Have you tried to strap down the gyro? try that if not try moving where you have the gyro placed.
   kostakis52 (30%)
Try with less gain on the gyro or make the servo arm smaller so the movement is no large on the tail blades.
   mikeyrcraptor (72%)
USE A GY 401 GYRO NOTHING BETTER....ALSO SET YOUR GYRO % RATE UP HIGHER TO 80-85%...LOW HEAD SPEED CAN CAUSE VERTICAL TAIL WAG

   Pygar (34%)
The vibration show on tail, but often originates from somwhere else. I had wagging in my T-rex 250 tail and it was eliminated it by changing a bent rear axel. Had a nodding problem with my EXI450 and it was eliminated by swapping the (new) rotorhead. Inexpensive parts are not always flawless, unfortuneately. Nice flying by the way.

Hello all can i run the Turnigy B36-50-04-3300kv motor and use 3-4000mah 3 cell lipo on this heli instead of using a 1800kv motor, i am still only a very new pilot and havent really got off the ground yet im just after a more stable bigger heli. Thankyou
   paul (33%)
i think for this heli supposed 5 cell 3000MaH
   ken (35%)
I would not recommend that, a good rule of thumb is ( higher kv = lower torq). Even assuming you could gear it properly , the amp draw would be severe , thus the heat of the motor and esc would also be quite severe. Also always remember ( a increase in voltage = a decrease in amp draw) . Also the weight of 3 4000 mah packs , would actually make this heli quite unstable. I would recommend staying in the 5 to 6s range, if you choose 6s, 1600- 1700kv using the stock gearing (13 tooth pinion) works fine , yealding great power , and good duration. If you choose a 5s configuration a 15 tooth pinion , with the 1600 to 1700kv works just fine also , as you are a new pilot and not looking for insane power YET! Hope this helps , Ken

2 Things i dont like: tail drive is not alloy
frame is not CF.

By the way: Are you gonna stock taht beast in Germany?
   Tony (50%)
fixing, repairing and diagnostics are all part of flying choppers,if you dont like the obvious then maybe a counter rotator would be more suitable?
Lets be realistic here, your paying half the cost of an ALIGN 500,if you want perfection then pay the perfect price, all in all HK keeps the price down to an affordable amount, otherwise there would be a lot of people who just would not be able to fly heli"s because of the price
   Skitzin (36%)
The HK500GT right now came in for me with no problems at all, only my landing gear was slightly bend. But nothing strange that could not be solved.

Anybody measured the motor current?? Align says 11 amp at 5.5 degree 6s lipo at hover-I get 18 amps with the stock blades and 14 amp with the HK blades for the 500, same setup, just remount blades.

PS my kit had a bent tail shaft too, blew the tail rotor to pieces before I could find the bent shaft!!!!

what tail servo should you use in the 500gt with the hk401 gyro
   moveon (46%)
Dan, You can choose to use mini or standard size tail servo. Mini servo will be futaba 9257 or standard servo will be futaba 9254. These servos run on 5V. You can also use align DS650 which is rated to run on 6V. Some gyro like align or spartan are able to run 1560us or 760us servos so you may also choose BLS980. So, there are lot's of good tail servos. I have been using 9257 on my Trex450 and it has been performing very well. Fellow pilots at the field also use 9257 for 500 size. :)

TrevJonez (78%)
i put a 9257 on my tail going to get a quark i think.

im halfway through changing ball links on the head so hopefully that will be it for the head.

i have a torque tube upgrade on its way from canada though. but it flys ok.

i got the recomended turnigy servo's and they are noisy and im not convinced they are all that great.

i did do an auto from about 10-12 feet up today just hovering out on the drive way love it. i was never confident enough to try it with my 450. i might with my 450 pro once i get the hang of it though!

oh also look up the battery tray modification where you trim out the frame and lower the battery tray it makes the 300mah packs fit under the cannopy without the headache some people have.

best of luck to you hope to hear good flight reports soon!
   moveon (46%)
Hi,

I own a Trex450SE since 4 years and auto at about 10-12feet is ok. So, I guess I will enjoy this 500. I am new to HK500 so, where do I refer to for the battery mount modifcation? I am not sure how the cheapo S9650 can do on this 500.I will also upgrade to torque tube. It cost about S$85 in Singapore. I will be using 2 x 2200 3S 25C. These pack are for my 450. Hopefully my HK500GT can arrive before next weekend. :)
   TrevJonez (78%)
if you look at the frames where the battery tray is located there is a slot just below it for a velcro strap to slide through to strap down your packs.

what you do is take a straight edge and draw a line along the lower edge of the slot up and down parallel to the battery tray and that is where you cut.

i used a pair of right and left tin snips(i work at a sign company so im comfortable with these tools mostly hobbyists would use a dremel type rotary tool) once i snipped out the top of the frame i took a big file and smoothed the tooth marks from the snips out and got rid of any shard edges to make sure any wire against it wont get cut or more importantly somebody's hand.

here is a link to a post with pictures.

has anyone had any issues with their one way bearing slipping in the housing. it happens to me when i flip to idle up going from 60% throttle to 85% throttle instantly.

i added a torque tube and align gp750 gyro today and let me tell you this heli is awesome now. i don't know if i mentioned above i replaced the plastic bell-hiller and washout arms with align arms on the head. super smooth too! after flying this my align 450 pro seems so small and touchy! can't wait to get them both out and open up with em. had to babysit and bad weather all weekend!

Hi,

What is the material used for the main shaft baering block on the stock HK500GT? Metal or FRN?

   TrevJonez (78%)
it is metal i ordered a metal upgrade thinking it would need it but did not! the bearings are very smooth. this heli will be very easy to do auto-rotations with.

be sure to order at least one spare main shaft as mine was bent on arrival.

and also the metal tail unit here requires you trim the tail boom to get proper belt tention. and the metal tail blade grips are ***r and have lots of slop just stick with plastic tail.

also be sure to order washout mixing arms and bell hiller mixing arms with your kit as the stock gt500 has plastic arms. though the rest of the head is metal.

i still need to inspect the ball links closer but the ones installed on the head on arrival seem to have alot of slop. i may replace them with a spare set i ordered with the kit to see if that solves the issues im having.

i wish some one would make pre set length links for the 500 like the 450 pro uses. makes head setup time tail hours less time to get it right. all you do is measure the links and check your tracking. done.

and also order the CF tail servo mount. the kit comes with screws and backplates for it. and the stock mounts are plastic.

another good modification i recommend is to drill 1/16" holes on inside of landing gear and use a screw to fix landing skids as the rubber grommets are a crash waiting to happen. they catch on a surface and tip your heli while the plastic will simply slide. also the screws keep your skids straight up and down where as with rubber they can twist around.

and last but not least add a set of carbon stabilizers to your order as the stock ones are flimsy plastic that will oscillate with any slight vibration and amplify the effect to your gyro. carbon fiber is stiff enough to hold straight!

This customer was awarded a credit for their answer.

Hi TrevJonez,

Thanks for all your tips. It's a surprise that the main bearing mount are metal. Hopefully, mine will be in good shape. I will be using CC ICE 75 and TOPBAND motor. The turnigy motor is out of stock. As for cyclic, I am going for the cheapo S9650. For tail, would be GP750 or GY520 with DS620 or 9254. Can't wait... :)
   moveon (46%)
Hi,

HK500GT first flight this morning. I could test much as I could not get enough headspeed. My ICE75 shows 1900. Hovering is acceptable and I must say that for this price, this kit is really worth every penny. After I get the blades tracking perfect, hovering is smooth. I will reconfigure my ICE75 and test flight soon. :)
29/01/2010

i started putting mine together of course with the upgrade metal tail. and the tail boom is too long or the tail is too short or the lait unit isn't right. lots could be wrong but i ended up cutting about 4mm off of the back end of the tail boom so the belt tention wouldn't be that of a banjo.

i used a pipe cutter to do the modification. the type with two rollers and a cutting wheel!

also im going to do the battery tray mod to allow for the bigger pack to fit alot easyer!

When can we have a torque tube option for this heli?
   TrevJonez (78%)
i found a torque tube option from a store based in canada for about 60$ USD before shipping and it is pretty nice quality and fit well but i think the bearings could be better as it seemed it would coast longer on a belt drive which seems odd but it may just need to be broke in a bit.

Very good package, all ok but where is the manual or even the instruction for built this ?
   Waveslider31 (36%)
I heard there was no manual. My HK500GT is on order. I downloaded the Manual and parts list for the Align copter online. Heard that is the way to go. Also think I saw something on HK site for a download.

What does the frame/fuselage come in? ex: plastic, metal, carbon fibre.
   alergigo (63%)
aluminium frame

fibra fuselage
   BillH (49%)
Why doesn't it come with a metal tail and carbon fiber frame?? I can get one at xheli for cheaper. ***********xheli****/exi500.html
And I don't have to buy the metal tail or carbon fiber frames.
   Jason5001 (4%)
In your dreams bill.
xheli's doesnt come with blades to begin with, and ours has more CF.
The xheli CF version is more than $130USD! The version they have that is similar to ours but without CF supports is $77 without blades.
Using the fastest shipping, our is still 20% cheaper.

XHELI's are cheats- I bought from them my first heli combo Walkera60b + EXI 450 CFv2 and paid 117$ for shipping to UAE using USPS Global Express service(3-5 days shipping). It was to my surprise that they instead shipped via USPS Prioroty Mail and I got my kit after a month. they overcharged me around 60$ and I had to wait for a month.

Are there still parts missing in the kits as buyers have said in the 'reviews' section?
   Jason5001 (4%)
No, not anymore. That was a once off issue and we sent out all the missing parts (about 10 customers).

Would this be a good beginner heli?
   Flew Boy (89%)
Hi moller, as my post just above this one says my mate and I are learning how to fly these things, we've both had 300 and 450 size choppers but they seem to be much twitchyer than these I think due to the weight of these ones being 1.8kgs things seem to happen a bit slower so it gives you a bit more reaction time and if you build these useing the recommend parts it's a cheap way of getting into it and once they get spare parts in stock it's cheap to fix. I've had approx 30 flights with mine now and this one has been much easier to fly than the smaller ones. Good luck if ya get one, just don't crash it and you'll love it :oD
ps, don't forget to use a simulator to practice on, might make the real one last a bit longer. Cheers mate *o)

think of flying a helicopter like balancing a stick on your hand. the shorter the stick is the harder it is to balance. whereas a baseball bat or broom handle is very easy to do. the bigger they are the more naturally stable they are(when setup correctly). so really a 700 size would be easier to hover with but the cost goes up with size! its all relative to how much your willing to spend.
