So I had a crash and my ESC got jammed into the cooling fins and broke them. The motor is fine, but I had to remove the cooling fins so that the motor would be balanced. Do you think I can run this without the cooling fins? Hopefully the motor does not heat up too much. There are many motors without this cooling fin arrangement.
   rapghsi (80%)
I ran this motor without a cooling fan, just test flught it and check heat, 50C is max, if you don't over it enjoy :)
This customer was awarded a credit for their answer.
   Good2Go (100%)
Thanks. Runs pretty cool even without the fan.
   M David (72%)
I would say try it. IMHO, cooling fins on motors don't work anyway.
   nomedmon (53%)
just check your temps and make sure to add a few extra air holes for some of the blades down draft to help cooling.

Hi Friends:
I use this motor in a HK450GT CCPM fullalloy and it works OK, I need another and there's not in stock. I bought a Turnigy Typhoon 450H 2218H Heli Motor 3450kv (450 class). Is it OK too for this heli? I use a ESC Turnigy Plush 40A.
Thanks a lot
   markdavey (34%)
The 2218H has more torque that the 2215H. Both are suitable for your heli.

helifly (72%)
I purchased two of these motors. When putting on the pinion gear I noticed that the flat notch was large on one and smaller on the other. The smaller one puts the pinion gear to high. Could this shaft be in backwards? Can you turn it around, how? How can you make the flat spot on the shaft larger?
   Demon (73%)
Hey helifly, Yeah its easy to sort the shaft out and it sounds like it is indeed backwards, You need to unscrew the two Phillips head screws on the fan assembly (on the back of the motor), that will grant you access to the grub screws that you need to remove to take out the shaft and motor housing. Once thats done its fairly easy to flip the shaft round and re-install it. (i think there is also an E-clip on the front you may need to take out). hope that helps, Demon
   helifly (72%)
Thanks for your reply. I had thought that this would be your advice. I will try to reverse it.
   helifly (72%)
After further inspection the shaft is actually long and turning it around isn't going to work based on where the flat spot is for the set screw. It looks like I have no choice but to try to grind down the flat section closer to the motor, which will lower my pinion gear to where I need it. Has anyone done this to a motor shaft, any advice?
   Hawk flyer (34%)
Im sure you already have been told to just file the flat spot I used a dremel tool and extended the flatspot down some of the after market pinions are a bit short so the set screw is up higher
   helifly (72%)
Thanks, that is what I did and it worked out well.

Has anyone used a prop adapter and a 6 x 5 prop on this motor? What amps and wattage would be expected?
   Demon (73%)
Although the motor should be fine for a plane, it is intended for heli use... having said that, i would imagine the current draw to be in the region of 15 - 20A, so on a 3S lipo that would be arround 220W. Hope that helps.
   vhoward1122 (53%)
Thanks, I think I have found a different motor that meets my needs better.
   flyingscot (54%)
I am using this on a pushy cat prop jet with a Turnigy sentry 40amp esc and a 4.75x4.75 prop. Lipo is a turnigy 3cell 2200 20c. It goes like a rocket. Still to use full throttle
   vhoward1122 (53%)
That's cool. However I have decided to look for a motor in the 600 to 700 watt range for the Funjet Ultra.

Does this motor need to be lubricated, and if so, how and where to lubricate. Thanks.
   alergigo (63%)
i think like all engines, like to have some lubrication (just in the bearings, just a little drop of oil (10 batteries)

remember :just a little drop
   Demon (73%)
To be honest brush-less motors don't need much maintenance at all, i have used mine for a year now and have just opened it twice to check everything inside looked good and was clean etc etc. some light oil on the bearings (3In1 or sewing machine oil) will help protect the bearings once in a while though.

Hope this helps,
Demon
   Kostas (47%)
Generally speaking brushless motors do not require lubrication, because they use sealed bearings. Some heli pilots like to lubricate their heli bearings by injecting special grease in the bearings, which requires removal of the bearings from the motor. I have several motors over 5 years old, medium use that are performing well without lubrication...
   angel1 (58%)
Not really, but you can lube the bearing if you want.
   sikky (64%)
3in1 oil or ask your lhs almost all motors need somr lubrication for a long life..
   markdavey (34%)
Bought 2 and not lubed either, both run fine.

Come on guys! Help us out

this motor???

I will be using the Turnigy Plush 40amp.

Also what 'Cut-off' setting do I use for a HK-450 heli, a 'soft-cut' or 'cut-off', and what cut-off voltage doi I set?

Thanks.
   madbuilder (57%)
Use a "high" cut-off to protect your lipo battery before its voltage drops too much. Use a soft cutoff: this means it will gradually reduce power, giving you a clue that it's time to LAND!
   robertx (21%)
soft-cut 3,1v
   Kostas (47%)
I would use no cut-off or soft cut-off. For a three cell pack use 9 volts. I highly recommend an external countdown timer with alarm. Any time you use cut-off you are taking a chance with your heli.. what altitude, attitude will you be when the cutoff occurs.
   Kostas (47%)
Always use soft on heli!! as for the voltage I would not go below 3.0V per cell.
   helibrit (42%)
as I was telling tonybooger set soft cutoff for heli so main blade are not forced to stop dead and if you do more than hover set middle cutoff volt and high for hovering this will help make lipo last longer. flysafe fly well Helibrit

   tonybooger (46%)
I dont think you can have a 'no-cut off' Its either soft cut, or cut off, only options I think
   Demon (73%)
Soft cut off means that the motor slows down for about 45 seconds and then stops to let you know the battery is running low - Hard cut-off will turn the motor off instantly (VERY bad for a helicopter). Hope that helps
   helibrit (42%)
for heli you would want to use soft cuttoff if you use cut off the blades will stop dead at shut down also set your esc at middle cutoff volt for general flying or high if just learning to hover this will make lipos last longer hope this helps got this info from helifreak**** when I started to research fly safe fly well hellibrit

Hey all, I have ordered this motor for my first CP build, along with PART#F050 11&12t pinion(from HK-450 parts list).
BUt no realise that this motor has a larger shaft(3.17mm) than the pinions I have ordered, which have a 3mm hole...

Is there any 10,11,12T pinions suitable for this motor available on this site?

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
   r_g_r (88%)
Hey, you might want to take a look at the comments of Part F050.
The pinions of "Part # F050" have 11 and 13 tooth with a inner diameter of 3.17mm.
They should fit this motor perfectly!

Hey guys, make sure to pick up a pair of M3 machine screws to mount this bad boy.

Warning: My motor wires run directly underneath the bottom of the screw hole. So I put the shortest screw I could find to avoid drilling into the wire!

Good news, you may be able to steal screws from your old computer. They look similar to 6-32 UNC but have finer thread. Look on Wikipedia "Computer case screw".

I NEED HELP, purchased this for HK450 build + (Hobbyking SS Series 40-50A ESC and TURNIGY 3A UBEC w/ Noise Reduction) have everything wired up and I can not get the motor to consistently start and run smooth. Diagnonsed with an rimpax 45a esc and motor works and tested ESC + bec combo on another motor and works perfect. How should I program the esc to work with this motor???? I have messed around with the ESC but to noavial have not found a winning combo...
Brake Setting?
Throttle Setting?
Timing Mode Setting?
Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) Setting?

Am I just unlucky? Am I the only person who encountered problems? (maybe received factory flops)
I ordered 2 Turnigy 2215 helicopter motors to test for the HK450.
My results: 1 arrived "dead". It seems to have a wire not connected as it "jittered" when switched on and that was at any throttle setting.
The 2nd one impressed me. It worked fine for a few flights. I then heard an ugly screeching sound.
On investigation something on the motor became skew or shrunk. The rotor touches the stator and also tries to separate (move away) from the stator when increasing the rotational speed.
I am concerned because if that is what I could expect from the motor for the HK500, I should not go there!
Did anyone use these motors for a while to find out how long can it really last?
   DocS9788 (50%)
You're MUCH luckier than I am. I ordered this motor and there is NO way...simply NO way I can fit it into the frame of my HK450. It is simply TOOOO big in diameter. So...how did you PROs get the thing into the frame? Also spent the better part of a DAY trying to find a Pinion gear "IN STOCK" anywhere in the WORLD ... Why can't they INCLUDE a 3-gear set (11T, 12T, 13T) with the motor? Mine 2215 is sitting UNUSED until some Design Engineer can tell me HOW to install it without completely redesigning the frame.
   madchattersa (84%)
no way you can get it into the fame???...it falls in as if it were made exclusively for the heli......i'll bet if you try singapore, you'll find pinion gears galore...for a few dollars....broaden your horizons
   RCER88 (32%)
I have this motor. I had NO problems installing it in my 450. The screw holes are not straight across from each other but it fits nicely inside the chassis and still adjustable so you can get the proper gear mesh.

Most ESC's use Low Timing for fast outrunners like this one.

Motor temp runs at 24 deg centigrade even under extreme loading, ambient temperature 19 degrees, pulling 30 amps for 1.5 minutes does not heat motor up, have a look at my wiki 133 for the results, look for 2215H should be at the top of the list.

14/06/2009
EatAtJoes (94%)
After multiple tests and Eagle Tree Logger with Optical RPM sensor I can say with 100% accuracy the following

This Motor is a 4000KV rating not 3550kv

12T Pinion Yields 3200 Head Speed
11T Pinion Yields 3000 Head Speed
10T Pinion Yields 2650 Head Speed

The Hovering in all modes above is a tiny 12A very efficient
Max Current 31Amps

Best performance Pinion for 450 Heli is the 11T, Head speed drops from 3000 to 2900 during 12 deg pitch pumps and draws 31 Amps flight times normal sports flying is around 9 mins.

Very pleased with this motor, 7 Amps less draw than the E500 and 5 Amps less drain than the 2836 in hover mode.

The 2836 is a great motor, heaps of power and draws 35Amps at 12 deg pitch pumps so all in all this 2215 motor is more efficient and has the power required for a 450 Heli.

Just Beware that if you place this on the HK450 with a calculated 12T pinion then you run the risk of the head exploding under the stress of over speed, change it to 11T and all will be fine.

Hope my results have helped you.

I will be keeping my 2836 in my FPV450 and keeping the 2215 in this heli, but buying 2 more of the great motors for my other 2 450 heli's.

Efficiency, Power, Weight.

Recommended!

Regards

Would be great if there would be a 2,3mm shaft version or 2,3 shaft available for this motor.
   CRJ700 (56%)
I am curious why you say you will continue to use the 2836 for FPV flight over the 2215. Especially since the 2215 is more efficient. Can you please tell me what your reasoning is. Thanks
13/06/2009
EatAtJoes (94%)
Well all I can say is this motor is an efficient little beast, I use it in my 450 Heli, and the power it produces is similar to the 2836 but with increased flight times. One thing though it is definitely not 3550kv, I know how they sound at 3000 head speed on a 450 heli as I have 4 of them all running between 2800 and 3000 head speed, this motor with a 12T pinion is way too much head speed even at 70% throttle, I am changing the pinion to a 10T because it really feel like a 3800kv motor, it is slightly faster that the 2836 in speed as I have that in my other heli and geared exactly the same with the same blades etc, and my 2836 produces 3100 head speed on a fully charged battery.
All in all this motor is efficient and doesnt bog down at 12 deg pitch, I have yet to install my Eagle Tree Logger to produce graphs of the results but my flight time doing normal circuits (no 3d) gave me 9.5 mins flight even though I set the throttle curve down making the motor less efficient.
The pop ups in comparison to the Align motor are much stronger and head speed is not effected like the Align motor.
All I can say is I will be buying more of these motors once I get a good graph of the AMP's and compare it against the 2836.
At this stage it's a definate winner for a 450 class heli.
I will be posting my results on my web site, for those who dont know my site simply search the net for HK450 and you will see the HK450 dot com web site which is my personal site with recommendations etc and my videos on fixes / builds.

Regards
Elias

looks like the exact same motor just labelled different. Yeah I wanted to try and get away with 30a est, or even align 35a esc. The turnigy 40aPlush is so big and clunky.
   CYBERNERO (69%)
I think you can go with your 30A ESC. As you know, the capability(Amps) of ESC is better for bigger. But I think 'constant 30A' is enough for TYPHOON motor. Good luck^^

I was going to gear down to about 9 pinion. I want a lot more power than the stock motor is providing. Although it's the cf version it's still pretty heavy with aluminum fame and head parts combined with 200g battery. The blade length and overall lenth is same as my t-rex 450? If you look on youtube lots of people are using Align 3550kv motor on belt cp.
   CYBERNERO (69%)
Sorry for my mension even not being have enough knowledge about the CP's set-up and especially your heli.^^ I think you're must be wright. After upgrading motor with 9T(or 10T) pinion, it will be more powerfull.

I think this motor is the same or quite similar as the 'INFINITY FX5' motor that sells In here, KOREA(south).
Look at the attached image. There's a lot of Korean flyers that using this motor. For the most, FX5 spend just only 16A (below 20A even max current). If this motor has same or similar spec, 40A ESC is enough as the HK said.

The belt CP is a 450 class heli (trex 450: 700mm rotor diameter, belt cp: 680mm diameter) and I have the align 335 pro blades fitted to my belt cp, so the blade diameter is actually 720mm *)
The king 2 & king 3 are 400 size heli's
   drdiscus (50%)
I've run the Belt on 315 blades and 325 blades. My issue with higher head speed is that the tail rotor on a stock CP is going to separate from the hub. If I upgrade to this mot or one like 28-36 with 13T pinion ( on the 2700 rpm per volt ) I would want to upgrade the tail rotor. It seem this motor is a good replacement motor...albeit in need of a reploacement pinion. This motor is probably NOT greater performance motor than the stock motor. You tell me...
