.46 cubic inches would be good (.52 seems a bit big) for a trainer I would recommend a large flat prop to keep the max speed down, maybe 12x4 inches

Sorry, ergocentric, I have a trainer 35 dm2 and 2,450 kgs which fly very well with an OS .20 FP (yes, bronze bearing and point twenty !) and a 9 x4 Graupner prop. If the OS can do it an ASP with twin ball bearing and a 2nd generation carburator can do it too much better: don't forget we speak of trainer that cannot be over motorized !

It will be good .40 .46 .52 for the trainer. Prop 11*7 11*6. Other combinations is not so good. My first trainer flyes with .52 and 11*7 prop very good and not over powered. You can try some base aerobatics with this combination. You will make you own deision when get some experience.

You would not need to modernize it. It just wont work. The engines for cars are totally different. Car engines are designed to spin at a very high rpm, and to run on high nitro, and low oil. The porting is totally different. In comparison to a full size automobile, the RC car engine is stuck in 1st gear, and the RC airplane engine is in 2nd or 3rd. This is a great aero engine, just not good for cars. You have to buy one designed for cars.

Does anyone have an equivalent power rating (in Watts) for this motor? That would allow for objective comparison with other engines.

I got this engine as an upgrade from an LA15. The LA weighs in at 182g/6.5oz, and this one at 225g/8oz. Rpm with the .21 after 3 tanks, with 2 nitro, 18%(50/50) oil: MAS 8x3 17.7K, MAS 9x4 14.2K, Right now, it's only about 5% better rpm over the bushed LA. At this point: idle is good, midrange is a little rich, and peak is good. It still needs more break in time, because the needle is still REAL touchy. The .15 is the real gem 19k w/MAS 8x3!!
Wow, this is the very, very powerful, and little engine. I use with TGY 8x7E, and TGY 9x5E prop., 10% nitro fuel, 90cc fuel tank in 800g 3D plane. Fly time 15 minutes, and the tank no empty. In my country this engine is dual price. Thanks HK!

Got this engine last week within 4 days after placing order, well packed. Fixed to my plane, started first go and runned in with a full tank. Next thing is to test it in flying, but I don't have any hesitation that it will perform very well, very good product, I will be looking for a 40 size soon.

A beautifully name engine. It works fine. Brute power, I am using it in a sports biplane. We use no nitro and we fly at 2.650 meters above sea level in Bogot with 9 x 4 propeller (Tornado Grish nylon). Its reliable, starts easily, simple to adjust, beautiful idle. Only problem: a very, very bad instruction leaflet. Seems this situation is common to most Chinese products. I thoroughly recommend it.
this engine works just as good as any for half the price

Great idle, Great price, Carb works excellent... It is little underpowered and probably it has shorter life than other similar engines.

great engine but ... the low rpm screw its totally crap. it unscrews by itself and engine goes off. my plane comes down. totally destroyed and carburator also broken. fixed again and works well with a little bit of glue on that screw. sounds very noisy but i like that because i fly far from houses...
